Crayon Pop, Bar Bar Bar, Pop Guys
Five-member girl group Crayon Pop has risen to the top of the charts and earned millions of fans with their hit single "Bar, Bar, Bar," officially released last week, and the accompanying music video.
At this point, any K-popper with an Internet connection knows that five-member girl group Crayon Pop has risen to the top of the charts and earned millions of fans with their hit single “Bar, Bar, Bar,” officially released last week, and the accompanying music video.
What very few people realize is how much of Crayon Pop’s fan base is comprised of men in their 30s.
“There’s even a new epithet called ‘Pop Guys,’” bandmember Way told Billboard Magazine in an interview published on Tuesday.
“It’s used for older men that like us. We have a lot of fans that are in their 30s. We heard we are like a rejuvenator for working men that are restless from the corporate life because of our bright energy.”
But whatever age or gender their fans are, Crayon Pop’s lead dancer Ellin says the response to “Bar Bar Bar” took the whole group by surprise.
“In the beginning, we weren’t sure [about our popularity] because we would go straight to practice after our daily schedule,” Ellin said.
“We found out about our growing popularity when people started telling us ‘you guys are really popular!’ That’s when it started really hitting us. We can also tell by the amount of video covers coming up on the Internet lately.”
And while the “Bar Bar Bar” video has earned them fans from around the world, the members of Crayon Pop say they currently have no plans to tour outside of South Korea.
Instead they are setting out to silence critics calling them a one-hit wonder with their next video, for which they are in the process of envisioning.
“Our next track has been selected, but not the concept,” the band said in a group statement.
“I think a lot of people like us not only for our uniqueness but also for the fact that they receive fun energy from watching us. So I think [our next concept] is going to be fun which will go well with the funky track.”
And what about the origin of the now famous helmets in the “Bar Bar Bar” video?
“The helmet was thought up by a member [of Crayon Pop] as a way to emphasize their heads while they′re jumping,” read a statement for the band’s record label Chrome Entertainment to eNEWS on Wednesday.
