YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk Explains Why He Ditched His Original Idea Of Forming A Girl Group On 'WIN: Who Is Next' Team A of "WIN: Who Is Next."

When the premiere episode of “WIN: Who Is Next,” YG Entertainment founder and CEO Yang Hyun Suk’s new reality show about forming a boy band, premieres on the South Korean music network Mnet on Friday, viewers may not know it almost had one very big difference.

That boy band fans will be voting on was almost a girl group.

At a media event at the Conrad Hotel Grand Ballroom in Seoul on Tuesday for “WIN: Who Is Next,” Yang explained that despite his experience in making boy band Big Bang superstars, he initially wanted to do something different for the show.

“To be honest, I wanted to make a group like SNSD, because that’s not my area of expertise,” said the YG CEO.

“I’ve always wondered what a pretty girl group doing hip hop would look like.”

According to Yang, although he was grooming a set of girl group contestants for “WIN,” they couldn’t perform at the level the K-pop record label mogul was asking for.

“Ultimately, they were short of the talent I was looking for,” Yang said. “I wasn’t 100 percent satisfied and couldn’t debut them.”

Yet Yang says he is still working to release a new all-female group on his label.

In “WIN: Who Is Next” two different teams of aspiring male K-pop artists will compete in “survival battles” according to eNEWS, for the chance to be in a YG Entertainment boy band.

“Team A” features five members including YG rookie solo artist Kang Seung Yoon, and Lee Seung Hoon of the reality show “K-Pop Star.”

With one more member but distinctly less star power, Team B’s six members include the 17-year-old rapper B.I., best known for his guest appearance on MC Mong track “Indian Boy” in 2009.

Yang said he will look to the show’s winners to bring YG Entertainment into the next decade.

“YG has changed a lot since Big Bang’s debut eight years ago,” he said. “The new group will carry the responsibility of YG for the next eight years.”

And, Yang pointed out, ultimately who his new band is will be up to the fans.

“While leading YG the last 15 years, I made a lot of the decisions, but this time, I decided to put the decision in the viewers’ hands,” he said.
