Best of Weekly Music Shows 3/25 – 3/31

What’s up Seoulmates? Glad to see you’ve come back for our weekly round-up of music show faves! This week, both SHINee and B.A.P had their goodbye stages and while we’re sad to see our boys go, there is definitely some sleep to caught up on. ZE:A5 made their debut with “The Day We Broke Up” and EvOL made their return with “Get Up.” This week, I thought the ladies seemed on their A game, leaving the boys behind in the dust, but I’ll let you be the judge of the performances gathered this week!

Even though Stardom Entertainment is currently embroiled in legal issues with Block B, the ladies of EvOL are still out to rock it. The female rappers in this group have a refreshing amount of talent worth taking note of.(...)

Infinite’s Sunggyu Reveals How He Uses His Camera Time

Infinite’s Sunggyu recently revealed how he appeals to viewers when the camera is on him.

On March 29, seven-member idol group Infinite made a guest appearance on KBS2′s “Yoo Hee Yul’s Sketchbook.”

On that day, Yoo Hee Yul asked the members, “Since you guys have a lot of members, the camera time on each of you individually must be very short. How do you all manage to show your appeal in those five seconds?”

Leader Sunggyu answered, “I don’t usually have a lot of gestures prepared, so it’s something I’ve definitely worried about. Whenever the camera would come to me, I used to give a wink. But since my eyes are small, you can’t even tell if I winked or just blinked. So I started using my hand to blow kisses at the camera.”

In related news, Moon Hee Joon was also a guest on the show along with Infinite.

Song Hye Gyo and Infinite’s Sung Jong Look Alike?

Song Hye Gyo and Infinite's Sung Jong Look Alike?

Do you think they look alike?

Recently, an online community forum posted several pictures comparing the two celebrities under the title "Infinite's Sung Jong Resembles Song Hye Gyo."

Their pictures are photoshopped side by side for better comparison. Sung Jong's picture taken in bed covers a part of his face highlighting his eyes, which really resemble the leading lady of "That Winter, The Wind Blows."

Many netizens left comments agreeing their uncanny resemblance. Some of the comments include, "Their eye area looks similar," "I'd believe it if they're related, "This is the definition of a beautiful couple," "I'm sure he would be happy to have an older sister like Song Hye Gyo."

Infinite’s Leader Sunggyu Gets Kissed on the Cheek

Infinite's Leader Sunggyu Gets Kissed on the Cheek

Infinite's leader Sunggyu was recently ambushed with a kiss to the cheek while filming for a show.

The ambush occurred while filming JTBC's "Lee Soo Geun and Kim Byung Man's High Society" when the participants of the game walked through door number 3 where Sunggyu and Super Junior's Shindong had been waiting with blindfolds. Two of the three participants immediately lunged towards Sunggyu and puckered their red lips for the idol. Sunggyu made an effort to cover his face and tried to shield himself against the attacker by curling up his body, but his efforts were in vain as a kiss mark was successfully planted on his left cheek.

After the chaos of the kiss ambush had settled, Sunggyu was left panting and exhausted. Shindong who was beside him offered his sympathy saying, "It's not that bad, the feeling will pass" causing laughter to ensue on the set.  The show aired on March 23. Check out the clip from the episode below!

Music & Lyrics: K-pop Should Be Thankful for Kim Eana

My colleague Paloma has launched a discussion about music and lyrics as a way to measure the evolution of an artist, and this time, I’m going to focus not on an idol or group, but on a songwriter: Kim Eana.

Kim started working in the industry in 2009 and has written mainly for artists who are distributed by Loen Entertainment. The lyricist often gets involved in the making of music videos and is one of those people in K-pop who really looks as if she knows where she’s heading and how she wants her material to look like. Most of my encounters with what she laid hands on have been moments of epiphany, like “I didn’t know K-pop can do that too.”

Exploring Freelance Hit-makers: Sweetune

Idol group in need of a career boost? Willing to forego standard pop trends by reinventing older genres? If so, then Sweetune is the right composing duo for you! Continuing with our series on freelance and inhouse hitmakers, the spotlight is now on Sweetune, a tag team of composers by the names of Han Jae-ho and Kim Seung-soo. Sweetune got their start with DSP Media, composing for girl group KARA which helped to transform them into the force they are today in both the Korean and Japanese music markets. From then on, Sweetune has remained loyal to KARA and their sister group, Rainbow, but they have also managed to spread their composing around to other groups, sometimes with equally as successful or unsatisfactory results.

Just like Yoo Young-jin, it’s almost impossible not to recognize a Sweetune composition. The two men seem extremely nostalgic about the 80′s brand of synth pop. And similar to Yoo Young-jin and R&B, they’re a match made in composition heaven.(...)

Are Designated Variety Idols Counterproductive?

The “variety-dols,” or variety idols, play a telling role in the realm of K-pop. As the name implies, this title is awarded to those special idols who excel in K-variety, those idols whose prominent personalities have appealed to the masses. Examples include 2AM‘s Jo Kwon, Super Junior‘s Heechul, and ZE:A‘s Kwanghee. As variety is a very unique and potentially highly beneficial aspect of idol culture, variety idols play fairly prominent roles in the group or parties they reside in. (...)

Infinite “Man in Love” – Kpop Music Mondays

Infinite Man in Love

Guise: we haven’t enjoyed making a Music Monday this much since we did Super Junior’s “Sexy, Free, and Single.” Oh man: we love this video so much. If you haven’t seen this masterpiece yet, check out Infinite’s “Man in Love” here:

Ok, so usually what we do for our Music Mondays is we write out a bunch of stuff, then move it around into some order that makes sense, and then try to polish it up with transitional words and phrases and fix the delivery on some of our jokes, and – for parts that we can’t fit in – we cut those out and put them into our blog posts. Today, for Infinite’s “Man in Love,” we’ve got nothing for this blog post at all – nothing from the script at least. We just couldn’t cut any of it out. We just loved talking about everything. Sorry if this Music Monday was too long as a result. We just couldn’t stop ourselves. This was the first Music Monday in a long time that we just flat out had a lot of fun doing, and didn’t work exceptionally hard at (though, we did work a lot longer on this Music Monday, because it’s almost 5 minutes longer than last Music Monday). We just saw the video, laughed with each other, imagine ridiculous skits, and went wild.

Yes, we know a lot of people are gonna be upset that we said the song wasn’t good. So what! There are songs we like and songs we don’t like. We can’t like everything Kpop has to offer! We loved U-Kiss’ “Standing Still” but we were destroyed by the blandness of the video. This week, we found the song not to our liking, but loved this video with all our hearts and souls. It’s so special! And we speak about this video with a special fondness. It’s almost like Super Junior’s “Cooking Cooking” and TVXQ’s “Balloons.” It’s that level of special. It’s like Infinite were like “well, now that we’ve got some of the cheesiest 80′s music out there, why not make a super cheesy video to go with it?” I’m predicting that they’ll stop using widescreen soon and will just tape everything on old Sony Handycams from now on. And moustaches. They must grow moustaches. By the way, “cheesy” is not a bad word. Cheesy’s fun and enjoyable. I’d rather watch a video that makes me feel good than watch one that frustrates me. This…has so many good feels in it that I cannot compute.

So, we’re scrubbing through the video now as we’re editing it, and HAHAHAHAHA OMG we just noticed something new. At the 2:17 second mark, when he picks out his shirt, slow that scene down frame by frame, if you’ve got the time. He throws his shirt onto the chair, but misses the chair completely and it falls to the ground. Like, it barely even hits the chair. It’s like he air balled on a layup. Another reason for us to love the video.

And how about the fact that the cat is totally misunderstood. He’s not signalling his preference in your outfit. He’s got a frustrated look on his face because he needs to poop. Did you even get him a cat litter, or did you just use Pickles the Cat as your own imaginary personal valet? Yes, his name is Pickles the Cat. I just made that up, and it’s gonna stick!

Ok I gotta stop. NO WAIT THE FLOUR BLOWING SCENE! WHO BLOWS FLOUR LIKE THAT? How’d he get flour everywhere? Must have been a result of his special apple recipe. Ok I’ma stop. Thank you for watching my video and reading my blog post. This concludes my happy talk on this happy video:

However, if you like the song more than we do, you can pick it up via YesAsia or iTunes (whenever it comes out on iTunes). Also, we’ve got bloopers for this week’s Music Monday (obviously!) in which we do our best rendition of Pump Up the Jam. It works for every instrument!

Get Your Character On!

Whip out your pens, tablet styluses, and Photoshop because Infinite’s having a “Character Contest”!

Partnering with Google+, Infinite is hosting an online competition from February 8th to March 7th in which you get to draw the members as “characters”, then upload your drawing on your Google+ page with the tag #INFINITECharacter, where people can share/ vote on it. Winners will be announced in March 12th, with first place winning 1,000,000 won (approximately $910), second place winning 500,000 won (approximately $460), and third place winning 300,000 won (approximately $270). There will also be a “Special Reward” of Nexus 7 tablets given to “7 lucky winners”.

This contest is pretty interesting on three levels. First, outside of Jonghyun’s hilarious Photoshop Minho contest on Twitter, K-pop contests never focus on fanart. Most K-pop fan competitions involve vocal covers or dance covers, so it’s pretty cool to see Woollim use a completely different medium to engage with the fans. Since fanart is pretty much a staple in a lot of fandoms, this contest is a great way to recognize and gauge the talents of a large part of the K-pop fanbase that has previously been pretty unrecognized by the industry.

KpopCharts Update: Without Safety Dolls

Infinite H Without You

Infinite H “Without You” – Vote for it Here!

Man: the Infinite Crew sure does make a lot of music. Does anyone know if any other subunits are gonna come out of Infinite? This is Infinite Hip Hop here (that’s supposedly what the H stands for). Are we gonna see an Infinite B (Bollywood)? Infinite J (Jazz Flute)? Infinite I (Irish Jigging)? I’d pay money for any one of those. I’d pay better money for all of them!

Side note: from video editors’ standpoint, we really like this video. The colour isolation isn’t something we ever do ourselves, because it’s not really needed since we aren’t artsy, but it’s something we see and think “damn, that looks nice!” Just thought we’d put that out there :D

DMTN “Safety Zone” – Vote for it Here!

You know, I just realized that we didn’t talk about the song itself at all. Dalmatian’s new name, DMTN, is just so…interesting, with so much to talk about, we couldn’t draw our attention away from it. Sure, some of you might be like “Who the eft cares?! It’s just a name!” But it’s NOT just a name. Group names are chosen for a reason. This wasn’t just a random spoonful of alphabet soup that they saw and said “hey! This is great! Let’s call ourselves this!” They picked it for a specific reason, and we want to know what that is. If it was picked because it’s cool, what is it about vowellessness that’s cool?

But we’ll stop talking about that here. The song’s very different from “That Man Opposed,” which is how we know Dalmatian, though I’m sure they released a bunch of other songs, so we can’t say that our one review is representative of their entirety. This song sounds a lot more mature and serious sounding. Also, the video is a goldmine, and we can definitely say a lot for it for Music Monday, just looking at the fight scene alone. Whoa. That fight scene is pretty…special.

Nine Muses “Dolls” – Vote for it Here!

FUNKY DISCO TIME!

Ok, so this is only the second 9Muses song that we ever heard and paid attention to, and we’re totally digging this group. They’re 2 for 2 in our eyes right now. They’re funky, have fun songs, and their rapper is probably one of the best female rappers in Kpop, though we don’t mind it when Wonder Girls rap, either. T-ara have ultra funky songs as well, but their rapping isn’t all too great in our opinions. Unless…do you count the breakdown in Roly Poly as rap? I LIKE A LIKE A THIS! I LIKE A LIKE A THAT! I LIKE THIS LIKE THAT YEAH! That was pure gold. GOLLLD! Also, how much of a mega shame was it that we didn’t get to freaking review that song for Music Monday? Why: because a different boy band was voted in, though NO SONG WAS EVER QUITE AS EPIC THAT YEAR. Yeah. Remembering our lack of reviewing that song makes us feel better about being able to review songs of our choice…so long as they’re in the top 3 :D
