Review: K-Pop Duo Tasty Brings The Bombastic Beat Of Classic Boy Bands On Their New Single 'MAMAMA' [VIDEO] K-pop duo Tasty recreates the often drum-heavy mix of 1980s boy bands like the New Kids and fellow Maurice Starr creation New Edition, to a great effect with their new single "MAMAMA."

I never thought that we’d reach a point in music where you could compare someone to New Kids On The Block as a compliment.

Yet K-pop duo Tasty recreates the often drum-heavy mix of 1980s boy bands like the New Kids and fellow Maurice Starr creation New Edition, to a great effect with their new single “MAMAMA.”

What the song has that many boy bands had from those two decades also had, is a beat that you can’t deny, even if you want to.

Even sugary pop at its best has something a little rough, a bit dangerous.

There is a hard edge to the drumbeat Tasty’s new single that draws you in and makes you want to dance before you even have time to consider the source. You could call that mark of any good pop song.

But perhaps even more importantly, Tasty seems to understand better than many acts on the K-pop charts that music can be fun, it can be passionate and you don’t always need to stick to the script.

When you hear the hard-hitting retro R&B drumbeat for long enough for it to start to become wallpaper musically, Tasty flips the rhythm around in a way that is completely unexpected in “MAMAMA.”

In a grove that is part big band swing and half samba clave, the song breaks into a completely different rhythm before snapping back into maximum dance floor grind.

There is also an effective use of dropouts from the band throughout the song, way more than you would even here from any pop song after 1965.

Like a classic hip hop track, the musical backdrop disappears and reappears on a dime for maximum impact and allows the so-called “Tasty Twins” to shine throughout.

But Tasty is no retro act.

The best thing about the duo, particularly on MAMAMA is their ability to take familiar musical touchstones like the call and response hook, a la New Kids On The Block’s “The Right Stuff,” and turn them into something more raw, more diverse and consequently more interesting than the original.

Although outdoing New Kids On The Block is not an unattainable goal for any talented act, what is a way more impressive musical achievement is Tasty’s ability to mold those well-worn musical clichés into something new, engaging and irresistibly dance-y.
